April 28th, 2019 marked the 3rd Annual Intimate Summit of Local Commercial Kombucha Brewers. An event we always look forward to, this is a gathering of fellow brewers to create a sense of community, share our stories, discuss challenges, and talk shop. Graciously hosted by Dasha and Seb of Artizen Kombucha, we join together for a casual potluck lunch and informal meeting in Perth, Ontario. This year, Dasha discussed her experience from Kombucha Brewers International Kombucha Kon event and shared information from the conference. A large focus of KKON 2019 was to collect data and create a Standard of Identity, a definition of the word Kombucha, to better differentiate and clarify the brew, while unifying the voice of brewers across the globe. We also discussed upcoming events, Boochfest 2019 and the Ontario Fermentation Festival, both of which have been created by attendees of our gathering, and are a must-see for kombucha and fermentation fans. Present this year was Artizen, Culture, Vox, Pyramid Ferments, Buchi Pop, Vivo, Laurentian Brew, and Kombucha Scientist, Alex May. We filled and refilled our glasses with plenty of kombucha, enjoying the different brews and sampling some alcoholic kombucha as well as a sip from Kombucha Iceland. To complete the visit, we took a sunny walk to Artizen's new brewery, in a wonderfully renovated bright space shared with Perth Pie Co. The time flew by, as it always does, and we look forward to catching up at events over the Summer. We have to say we have a pretty awesome crew of brewers in the area!

We traveled to Artizen Kombucha in Perth this past weekend to attend the 2nd annual Intimate Summit of Kombucha Brewers from around the area. The list of kombucha breweries is expanding and it was great to meet the makers and catch up with friends from last year.
In attendance this year were Pyramid Ferments, Buchipop, Vox, Vivo, Artizen, Laurentian Brew, Alex May - Kombucha Scientist, and the founders of Boochfest, Drew and Samira. Missing were Culture and Loon, as they both had prior commitments (the busy life of a microbrewer!). We enjoyed good food, tasty kombucha and bubbly jun, talked shop and shared equipment and brewing details. Alex discussed lab findings and shared his knowledge from his studies of kombucha in the U.S. (thanks Alex!). How cool is it that we can all meet together and unite as fellow brewers, helping build an alliance and shape the mold of the kombucha brand as a whole!? We're excited to be part of a growing industry that understands the importance of gut health and sees the benefit to offering an unpasteurized, small-batch, healthy alternative beverage. There are some great festivals coming up this Summer specifically showcasing the talents of local kombucha brewers including BOOCHFEST in Ottawa July 22, 2018 and the 2nd annual Ontario Fermentation Festival (founded by Pyramid Ferments) in Picton on August 4, 2018. Commercial and artisan brewers will be sharing samples and selling their product, and both festivals will also have an amateur home brewer contest. We hope to see you there! BIG THANKS once again to Dasha and Seb for opening up their home, organizing the meeting, and showing us around their brewery! |
